Summer Research Initiative 2024
In 2024, The 1856 Project will once again collaborate with the BSOS Summer Research Initiative (SRI) to find rising juniors and seniors to participate in an 8-week research internship that will run from June 3rd-July 26th. The chosen SRI scholars will work with UMD Special Collections & University Archives in the historical exploration of the slave economy and how slavery operated in the immediate vicinity of the Maryland Agricultural College (now the University of Maryland) in the first half of the 19th century.
The SRI students will work as part of a team led by mentors Barnet Pavão-Zuckerman, (Chair, Anthropology Dept.), Lae’l Hughes-Watkins (Associate Director for Engagement, Inclusion, and Reparative Archiving, Special Collections & University Archives) and Doug McElrath (Director, Special Collections & University Archives). They will also receive support from Traci Dula (Associate Director, Honors College, The 1856 Project Co-Chair), Manuel Mendez (University Archives Graduate Assistant), and Mouhanad Al-Rifay (Program Administrative Specialist for The 1856 Project).
