Joni Floyd ​​​​is the Curator of State of Maryland and Historical Collections for the Libraries and a former co-chair of The 1856 Project. She holds a PhD and an MA in English from UCLA and an MLS in Archives and Archival Administration from UM’s iSchool. From 2009-2016, she served as the executive director of the Maryland Commission on African American History and Culture and director of the Banneker-Douglass Museum. Currently she leads the Maryland History and Culture Collaborative, a coalition of cultural heritage institutions in the state. As a student of black feminist thought, intersectionality informs Joni’s critical archival work. Her research interests include community archives advocacy, personal history writing, and restorative archival practices. A native Marylander, Joni is active in the Queen descendant community.
